Q: I am trying to promote myself in the resume not only as a seasoned financial executive, but also one who has interest and proven capabilities in all strategic and operational moves of senior management. How do I convey that in my resume or doesn’t it matter? ~ John, California
A: Yes John, it does matter! There is a big difference between promoting yourself as a finance executive and as an operational executive. Finance executives tend to only focus on the quantitative components of a business like financial planning and analysis, P&L responsibility, cash flow management, budgeting, forecasting, etc. Operational executives have background in finance, but they also focus on things like strategic planning, executive leadership, operations management, process improvement, etc. If you market yourself as a solid candidate with expert financial core competencies in addition to your stellar operational skills, you will be a stand out candidate for any senior management role.
